Military Plates

U.S. Veteran Plate

All honorably discharged United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine, Merchant Marine, or Coast Guard Veterans with at least 180 days of service and who are Kansas residents qualify for this Veteran plate. Individuals will be required to show a DD214 that shows honorably discharged. If the vehicle is currently tagged, individuals must bring in the current plate along with the current owner's registration and proof of insurance to be replaced by the Veteran plate. 

US Veteran Plate

The veteran must be listed on the title to be eligible for the plate. If the vehicle is leased the veteran must be listed on the title as well. This plate is available for autos, trucks with a gross weight of 20,000 pounds or less, motorcycles, and RV trailers.

Cost: Tag, title fees, and personal property taxes.

National Guard Plate

Applicants may use their United States Armed Forces ID cards for proof of Guard membership or complete the TR-129 Application for National Guard License Plate Form.. Retired members of the Kansas National Guard may retain their National Guard plates by having retired ID cards for proof. Applicants must be a Kansas resident. On initial application, parts 1 and 2 of the application should be completed. If the vehicle has a current regular plate, that plate must be taken to the treasurer's office along with the current owner's registration and proof of insurance to be replaced with a National Guard plate. 

National Guard Plate

The National Guard member must be on the title of the vehicle to be eligible for the plate. If the vehicle is leased the National Guard member must be on the title as well. This plate is only available for autos and trucks with a gross weight of 20,000 pounds or less.

Cost: Tag, title fees and personal property taxes.

Combat Wounded Plate

The first time applying for the Combat Wounded plate, an applicant must provide a copy of his/her DD214 or certificate showing they were awarded the Purple Heart . The applicant must be a Kansas resident. Combat Wounded plates cannot be issued to a company owned vehicle. If the vehicle is leased, the applicant must be listed on the title as well. If the vehicle has a current regular plate, that plate must be taken to the treasurer's office along with the current owner's registration and proof of insurance to be replaced with a Combat Wounded plate

This plate is available for autos, trucks with a gross weight of 20,000 pounds or less, and motorcycles.

Cost: Applicant must pay yearly registration fees and personal property taxes.




Disabled Veteran Plate

To be eligible for this plate the veteran must be 50% permanently disabled and a Kansas resident. He/she must provide a TR-103 Application for Disabled Veterans License Plate with an initial disabled veteran application. Recertification is required every three years. Disabled Veteran plates can be transferred from an individual name to a trust as long as an individual has the plate, Disabled Veteran card, and his/her name on the trust. If the vehicle is leased the disabled veteran must be listed on the title as well.

If the vehicle has a current plate that plate must be taken to the treasurer's office along with the current owner registration and proof of insurance to be replaced with a Disabled Veteran plate.

Cost: There is no registration fee for the first plate, however there are tag fees, title fees and personal property taxes. Additional plates will require the applicant to pay registration fees and personal property taxes.

Ex Prisoner of War Plate

Applicant for EX-POW Plate must provide proof of ownership to the vehicle and be a Kansas resident. If the vehicle is leased the applicant must be listed on the title as well. The EX-POW must be on the title. Verification of EX-POW status can be made by one of the following:

  • Documentation from the Veterans Administration
  • Documentation from a branch of the Armed Services
  • Newspaper clippings verifying EX-POW status
  • 2 notarized statements verifying EX-POW status
POW Plate

A surviving spouse may only have the EX-POW plate if the deceased POW had already been issued an EX-POW plate. Only one EX-POW plate per individual. If the vehicle has a current plate that plate must be taken to the treasurer's office along with the current owner registration and proof of insurance to be replaced with a EX-POW plate. A TR-120 Ex-Prisoner of War License Plate Application must be completed or verification documentation provided.

Cost: Registration fee is waived, but tag fees, title fees and personal property taxes will be due.

Gold Star Mother

The Gold Star Mothers plate may be issued to any owner or lessee of autos, trucks with a gross weight of 20,000 or less and motorcycles. There are no limits to the number of plates they may display, however, the Gold Star Mother must be displayed as an owner on the title of the vehicle. If the vehicle is leased the Gold Star Mother must be listed on the title as well. This plate may not be transferred to any other person.

Gold Star

The applicant must provide proof she is the mother of the deceased soldier (copy of birth certificate) who died while serving in good standing in the military of the United States. Any of the following forms may be used:

  • DD1300 Report of casualty or a death certificate
  • DD2064 Died in Theatre
  • DD93 which states the soldier died on active duty and will also name the parents
  • Official notification of death such as a telegram

If the mother's name is not apparent on any of these documents, in addition we will accept a copy of the obituary notice which lists the mother.

Cost: This plate is applied for in the Treasurer's office and then sent from the State for later delivery. There is an initial delivery fee of $5, plus registration fees and property taxes
